Sharon E Mason

I teach philosophy at the University of Central Arkansas (UCA). My background is in contemporary analytic epistemology, and my current research focuses on epistemologies of ignorance, perspective, and non-belief. I am working on a paper about hermeneutical injustice and conceptual engineering, as well as a book chapter on the relation between not-believing and active ignorance for a forthcoming anthology. I have also collaborated on several interdisciplinary projects that address applied questions related to climate science education and privacy. My day-to-day thoughts tend to feel the gravitational pull of philosophical pedagogy, which has also worked its way into my published work. I have co-authored a paper on teaching philosophy as a way of life, and I have two ongoing pedagogy-related projects: the first is a new companion text for early modern philosophy, and the second is a journal-length article on how to help make disciplinary norms in philosophy more transparent to students.

My regular rotation of courses includes upper level courses in Epistemology (Theories of Knowledge), Early Modern Philosophy, Philosophy of Science, Symbolic Logic, and Food Ethics. I also teach Introduction to Philosophy (Philosophy for Living) and a First Year Humanities Seminar on The Good Life. I am an active member of the American Association of Philosophy Teachers (AAPT) and I am a supporting coach for the UCA Ethics Bowl Team, which has won a bid to nationals for four out of the past five years.
