This course is structured around the idea that our relation to food is a microcosm of many broader ethical questions about how to live well. It will span a variety of topics, but will especially focus on food as it relates to animal and agricultural ethics, human identity, social justice, and ecological sustainability. It will also include an exploration of taste as a primary way of experiencing the world; of aesthetic and cultural dimensions of eating; of the interplay between food and gender identity; and of global justice in the production and distribution of food. This course is an elective that fulfills three credits in the “Ethics and Values” area, focusing on responsible living and ethical citizenship.
